Decaf And Tea Leaves - Coffee Free Does Not Mean Caffeine-Free

Now that we have shared our best caffeine-free Starbucks drinks with you, let's talk about what you should avoid from ordering at Starbucks.

So say you just want a nice simple cup of decaffeinated black tea, you’d think that it wouldn’t contain any caffeine because the name says it all. Right?

Unfortunately, that's a common misconception. And the same applies to decaf coffee and their decaf iced coffees...

Even though it doesn’t have as much as regular tea or coffee, there are still low levels of caffeine in them.

Among the Starbucks coffee beans, the Decaf Pike Place, for instance, you will find 15mg of caffeine in a Short cup, 20mg in a Tall, 25mg in a Grande, and 30mg in a Venti.

If you want a truly caffeine-free cup of tea, then make sure to order an herbal tea, since they are not made with the tea plant, Camellia Sinensis, which is caffeinated.

Caffeine In Cocoa

So, to avoid consuming caffeine, you have to avoid decaf coffee and tea… surely hot chocolate should be ok, right?

Sadly, no...

Chocolate also naturally contains caffeine, and there are traces of caffeine in the Starbucks hot chocolate too.

Just like the decaf coffee options, the Starbucks hot chocolate contains 15mg of caffeine in a Short cup, 20mg in a Tall, 25mg in a Grande, and 30mg in a Venti. So hot chocolate is also off the table.

Do You Know About Green Coffee Extract?

You're probably wondering why we didn't mention any of the Starbucks Refreshers on our list...

Well, a lesser-known source of caffeine that is well hidden in caffeinated drinks is Green Coffee Extract. It is an additive made from unroasted coffee beans, adding caffeine into drinks without the dark, roasted flavors.

All of the Starbucks Refreshers contain Green Coffee Extract, so, unfortunately, if you’re after a caffeine-free drink, you’ll have to avoid all of these options too.

The Starbucks Refreshers collection, contains between 35mg and 70mg of caffeine, between the sizes of Tall and Venti.

Because none of these drinks contain caffeine, you can even have some of them late at night too, because your risk of not being able to get to sleep due to caffeine is no longer an issue.
