Starbucks Chocolate Drinks

You’re probably craving chocolate right now and you’re wondering which Starbucks chocolate drinks should you try.

Or maybe you’re someone like me who is obsessed with chocolate and want to try chocolate drinks at Starbucks every weekend…

Or every day…

This is a no-judgement zone!

Here’s a fun fact before we dive into this list of delicious chocolate Starbucks drinks.

Did you know that chocolate was consumed as a drink way before it was made into chocolate bars? It was created by the Olmecs in Mesoamerica and it’s been popular for over 4,000 years.

Although, they did sometimes give their sacrificial victims a chocolate drink, but not from Starbucks (for obvious reasons). And it was a nice farewell treat!

If you are intrigued, then make sure you read more about it at the end of this article.

Chocolate drinks became so popular that even the Aztecs started to add chilies to them for some variety. And this tradition continues with Starbucks, as they come up with interesting chocolate drinks every year to keep us coming back for more.

So keep reading to learn more about these yummy Starbucks chocolate drinks.

Here are the Best Starbucks Chocolate Drinks to Try

As we mentioned earlier, Starbucks has many variations of classic chocolate drinks and some of them even include some caffeine.

So we will go over all the options they have as well as some TikTok famous drinks. We will include the ingredients so you have a better idea of what it would taste like, the caffeine content, as well as the calories for the different Starbucks cup sizes.

So let's dive in...

1. Starbucks White Chocolate Mocha

If you want something hot and sweet then this is what you’re after. The sweetness is the main flavor here with a hint of coffee. With this combo of caffeine and sugar, you’ll be buzzing for some time.

Unfortunately, a venti white chocolate mocha has roughly the same calories as a dinner, so it’s probably best to only have this as a treat.

2. Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

Frappuccinos are a refreshing treat, with or without coffee.

This version of the frappuccino includes a coffee base with the sweetness of the mocha sauce, and the crunch of the cookie crumble topping. Sweet but delicious!

It’s more like a Starbucks chocolate dessert than a Starbucks chocolate drink… haha! Nonetheless, it is quite popular, and for good reason!

3. Chocolate Cream Cold Brew

Cold brew is coffee steeped in cold water for up to 20 hours to give it that unique flavor. It makes the coffee less bitter than regular Starbucks iced coffee.

This cold brew with vanilla and chocolate cream adds to the sweetness of the coffee to give a smooth and refreshing drink.

If you’ve never tried the different flavored cold foam toppings at Starbucks, then you are missing out my friend. They are smooth, sweet, and friggin’ delicious! Especially the chocolate cold foam!

4. Caffè Mocha

An original chocolate coffee drink at Starbucks and without a multitude of additives. This simple coffee drink is still a favorite for its simplicity and how good it tastes.

The full-bodied espresso is balanced with the bittersweet mocha sauce. The sweetness doesn’t overpower the coffee taste but adds to it.

5. Starbucks Reserve Dark Chocolate Mocha

This Starbucks chocolate drink is an elevated version of the caffe mocha since it is made in small lots with rare coffee beans to create the reserve espresso.

It is then paired with cocoa, ground chocolate, and steamed milk to create the perfect combination of sweetness.

We all know chocolate and coffee pair well and this Starbucks drink is no exception. For a taste of some of Starbucks’ rarest coffee beans, this is one you’ll want to give a try.

6. Hot Chocolate

You just can’t go wrong with the classic hot chocolate Starbucks drink, because there’s nothing better to have on a cold winter day than a steaming cup of delicious hot chocolate.

Starbucks creates its hot chocolate with a twist by adding vanilla syrup and mocha sauce.

Chocolate has some caffeine in it, so the mocha sauce in this drink is what’s adding the caffeine content to the drink. It’s not much, but it is there.

You can control the sweetness of the drink by either asking for less or more (no one’s judging) vanilla syrup.

7. Double Chocolaty Chip Creme Frappuccino

More is more or the more the merrier! These two sayings fit perfectly in this Starbucks chocolate drink. It’s double the chocolate and double the yumminess.

You can have this frappuccino with the frappuccino coffee base adding some bitterness to the chocolatey sweetness, and making this drink a real treat.

The caffeine content mentioned above is for the frappuccino creme based drink, and this caffeine is from the chocolate chips.

If you choose to get the double chocolate chip frappuccino coffee base, then the caffeine content will be higher.

8. Iced Chocolate Almondmilk Shaken Espresso

This chocolate coffee at Starbucks is perfect for those trying to avoid regular milk, such as vegans. But even if you aren’t vegan, this is one tasty treat.

The nuttiness from the almond milk and the chocolate go well together for a delicate sweet taste. It’s almost like a caffeinated Nutella iced coffee?!

The best part is that it’s pretty low in calories, and that’s because the chocolate flavoring in this Starbucks chocolate drink is subtle.

This might be the strongest Starbucks drink on this list.

9. White Hot Chocolate

Wait, pause… A white hot chocolate?

Yes, you read that right!

It’s a hot chocolate made with white chocolate sauce for a sweeter and less caffeinated Starbucks chocolate drink! That’s because white chocolate doesn’t have caffeine in it.

A white hot chocolate is ideal for those who have a sweet tooth and prefer no caffeine at all in their drink.

10. Java Chip Frappuccino

Here’s another chocolate Starbucks frappuccino and it is the perfect combination of chocolate chips and coffee for those who want a bit more of a caffeine hit.

You can also add one or more espresso shots to take it to the next level. Just keep in mind not to overdo it, if you don’t want the caffeine jitters.

Of course, if you add espresso to this drink, then the caffeine content would be higher. Each espresso shot gives, approximately, 75mg of caffeine.

11. TikTok Iced White Chocolate Mocha

This drink is based on the regular iced white mocha that is available on the Starbucks chocolate menu.

Just ask for an iced white mocha with caramel drizzle on the sides of the cup and vanilla sweet cream cold foam instead of whipped cream.

It’s a pretty sweet drink and it is ideal for those who have a sweet tooth!

When you are ordering these pretty-looking and sometimes complicated TikTok drinks, just make sure the barista is not too busy and they have the time to custom make these drinks!

12. TikTok Nutella Cold Brew

This is another TikTok famous drink that I personally love so much, because who doesn’t love Nutella??!!

Mind you, Starbucks doesn’t actually use Nutella spread to make this chocolate Starbucks drink, nor is it advertised on its menu.

It’s called the TikTok Nutella Cold Brew because it tastes quite similar to Nutella with the vanilla and hazelnut syrups added to the chocolate mocha sauce.

Plus it looks just as good as it tastes!

To order this drink just ask for a Grande Cold Brew with two pumps of Mocha, 2 pumps of Hazelnut, light heavy cream, and vanilla sweet cold foam with one pump of hazelnut blended in.

13. Chocolate Covered Strawberry Creme Frappuccino

This is a Starbucks secret menu drink and it’s basically the drink version of chocolate covered strawberries.

This chocolate covered strawberry frappuccino is one of those Starbucks chocolate drinks that you just can’t get enough of cause it’s so darn delicious!

Since it is a secret menu item, you just have to ask the barista to add chocolate chips to the strawberry creme frappuccino drink and to top off the whipped cream with mocha drizzle.

Keep in mind that the caffeine content is from the chocolate chips and the mocha drizzle.

14. Starbucks Chocolate Milk

This is the classic chocolate milk that you can buy from any grocery store, and of course is one of the simplest and best Starbucks chocolate drinks, in our opinion!

You can either buy the premade Milk2Go bottle that is usually in the fridge under the pastry display, which is made of 1% milk and comes with 120 calories and 0 mg of caffeine.

On the other hand, you can ask for a freshly made chocolate milk drink from your barista and it’s actually quite simple to make.

They just add mocha sauce and vanilla syrup to the cold milk of your choosing, then they top it off with whipped cream and mocha drizzle. Et voila!

Plus this is probably one of the cheapest Starbucks chocolate drinks you can buy.

15. Peppermint Hot Chocolate

This is one of the holiday chocolate drinks at Starbucks and it’s quite festive. The best part is that you can get it even when the holidays are passed and done.

It’s because Starbucks always carries their peppermint syrup year round and that’s pretty much the only addition to the regular hot chocolate.

The toasted white hot chocolate is another festive chocolate drink at Starbucks and it’s quite tasty.

Unfortunately, this drink is not available year-round, so make sure you try it during the holidays.

It is very similar to white hot chocolate, but it has toasted white mocha chocolate sauce instead of regular white mocha sauce, and it comes with sparkles!!

This drink is perfect for those who want a festive beverage like the peppermint hot chocolate, but don’t want to miss out on the caffeine.

Rejoice, because this drink is also available year-round!

It’s because the white chocolate mocha is sweeter than the regular mocha sauce.

This drink is also available year-round, so you can take your own granny there anytime you want to surprise her with a treat.

Finally on our list of the best Starbucks chocolate drinks is another frappuccino, because why not?

The peppermint mocha creme frappuccino is the peppermint hot chocolate’s younger brother: it’s fun and rated PG…

This drink does not come with coffee or espresso, so it is a perfect Starbucks drink for kids!

Don’t worry though, because you can get this drink in a coffee base version, just omit the word “creme” from your order, and there you go.

Tips for Ordering Starbucks Chocolate Drinks

Here are a few things you should keep in mind when you are ordering Starbucks chocolate drinks.

We’ve mentioned a few of them already, but we will mention them again just in case you missed them!

  • Most of the drinks on this list are available year-round, but there are some that are only available during the holidays.

  • There are some chocolate drinks that belong to the secret menu or are TikTok creations.

  • The regular mocha sauce contains some caffeine, but very little. The white chocolate mocha sauce doesn't and drinks made with it and without espresso would be caffeine free Starbucks drinks.

  • Any of the hot drinks on this list can be made iced and vice versa, except for the frappuccinos.
  • A mocha drink is a Starbucks chocolate drink that combines chocolate and coffee.

Origin of Chocolate Drinks

We know that our quick chocolate history in the introduction piqued your interest, so we decided to dive deeper into it.

The way we consume chocolate now was invented in the late 19th century.

The origin of chocolate as a drink was derived in Mesoamerica, around 1800 BC by the Olmec civilization. They made the cacao beans into drinking chocolate and used it as a ceremonial drink to give to sacrificial victims.

The Mayans expanded on the original chocolate drink by roasting and grinding the cacao seeds, then adding water, chilies, and cornmeal. They used two cups and poured them back and forth to create a foam.

It soon spread throughout the world and to no one's surprise, everyone loved it.

Chocolate and coffee houses became popular but they weren’t like they are today. They were a bit seedy to the point where in England they tried to ban public houses from selling coffee, tea, or chocolate.

Luckily it lasted a few weeks because the ban was so unpopular…

Then Nestle and Cadbury started to sell cocoa powder and it has become a much-loved drink all over the world.

Once seen as a gift from gods and a drink for the nobility, it has thankfully become available to us peasants, haha!
