First Impressions
When I first received this boba kit I was impressed by the packaging. Pearly did a great job with the packaging design and it's obvious they care about their product.
Each boba tea flavor was individually packed in its own box, each containing 6 milk tea packets and 6 tapioca pearl packets. This means each box contains a total of 12 packets per flavor, and so the Starter Bundle contains a total of 24 packets in total.
Although some may see this as a bit wasteful, I actually think it's a great idea because it keeps the tea and tapioca boba pearls fresh, and it's very convenient when it comes to making your bubble tea - there is no need to measure anything!
If you're worried about the environment, the packaging does minimize the use of plastics and materials. A nice touch, for example, are the instructions directly printed on the bubble tea boxes, which reduces waste.
Talking about the environment, I love that this kit comes with a re-usable bubble tea cup with its own lid and a stainless steel straw. It also comes with a brush to clean your straw!
In short, this is one of the most complete bubble tea kits we've come across. Everything you need to make your boba tea is in the box (well, except water and ice obviously). There is no need for you to purchase any additional ingredients such as milk or brown sugar.

Preparation - Does It Actually Take 3 Minutes?
One of the features Pearly highlights on their DIY bubble tea kits is that it takes less than 3 minutes to have your bubble tea ready.
Is this true, in practice?
Well, I followed the instructions and indeed the preparation time for this boba tea kit is extremely fast. It took me about 2.5 minutes to have my boba ready, which is quite impressive.
Making your boba with this kit involves:
- Dissolving the boba tea powder in 4-5 oz of hot water (about 1/3 of your cup) by stirring for about 30 seconds. We found hot tap water was enough to dissolve the powder without any lumps appearing.
- Filling your cup with the mix with ice.
- Microwaving the tapioca pearls in a microwave-safe bowl for about 20-30 seconds (using our microwave for 25 seconds yielded the best results).
- Adding the tapioca pearls into your boba cup, and then stirring.
In short, we found making bubble tea with the Pearly DIY boba kits it's extremely easy and quick.

Does it Taste Good?
How does this boba tea kit by Pearly taste?
In short, it's quite delicious! I was really impressed with the flavor of both the classic milk tea and taro milk tea. Neither of these flavors was overly sweet.
The classic milk tea had a smooth and creamy taste, and you could taste the black tea and the brown sugar molasses. The taro milk tea had a lovely sweetness to it as well as creamy and pleasant texture.
Although obviously your drink would taste better with loose-leaf tea, fresh milk, and fresh tapioca, preparing boba with these fresh ingredients could easily take 20 minutes.
So, it seems like Pearly has found a great compromise between flavor and convenience.
And just so you know, many boba tea shops also use powders instead of tea leaves, so you are getting something very similar to what you'd get in a boba shop.
A Good Value Purchase?
There are a few costs associated with purchasing bubble tea at a tea shop.
At the time of writing, this kit is $68, which is equivalent to about $5.67 per drink. However, this cost includes the reusable boba cup, straw, and brush. Buying one of the stand-alone Pearly milk tea flavors costs $24 for 6 drinks or $4 per drink.
This is lower than any bubble tea you could get from a bubble tea shop.
As I've noted, you are also saving time (which I consider it a cost). Going to my local bubble tea shop can take up to 30 minutes since I usually have to line up.
Finally, planet Earth will thank you for not using one those silly single-use plastic cups and straws you get at boba shops.
